A weekend of fabulous music ...

We start off with a ‘bang’ on Friday night with Jordan Aikin and Quercus, who are an exciting contemporary folk quintet based in Newcastle. Rachael McShane (who gained fame as an original member of the award-winning folk big band, Bellowhead) is our Friday headlining act with her band, The Cartographers. Their powerful blend of traditional folk and contemporary sounds, with Rachael's stunning voice and instrumental skills leading the line will ‘wow’ our festival audience.

Saturday afternoon sees a lovely mix of sounds and styles with Eabhal and their vibrant and energetic west Scotland sound, Con’tylia explore the wonders of Greek folk music, ranging from ambient and passionate ballads to Greek island dances, and Cosys Ex, a collective of musicians and producers; founded in Newcastle, with their fusion of genres and players from a traditional Scottish and English backgrounds along with more contemporary electronic influences, backed up with rich vocal harmonies and earth moving frequencies.

The Wear’d Aliens are an ever-expanding group of young musicians, they breathe new life into distinctly local music that had lain hidden in a dusty corner of the Beamish Archives for over 60 years and they will lead our family ceilidh.

Expect the unexpected on the Saturday night of our festival, with global grooves, instrumental fireworks, rich vocal harmonies and delicate a cappella emerging from a melting pot of original and traditional tunes from the British Isles to the Balkans: The electrifying sound of 6 piece (un)traditional folk band, Bonfire Radicals is both intensely creative and irresistibly fun.

Sherburn Bartley Sanders are collectively and affectionately known as ‘The Voice of the Moors’ and their soulful songs, exhilarating tunes and quick-witted banter begin our Sunday afternoon music programme.

And for the remainder of our Sunday afternoon, 2 artists that have been on our radar for years and we’re really excited that they will be playing in Allendale as part of our 2025 festival:

Firstly, Tamsin Elliott. Her "beautiful, filmic compositions for accordion, harp, whistle and voice" (The Guardian) are rooted in tradition, whilst pushing boundaries and exploring minimalist, neo-classical, sound art and other non-traditional formats. She will be playing with her band, Hedera.

And secondly, Cosmo Sheldrake, a multi-instrumentalist and composer that channels the joy of the natural world into his music. His music ranges widely from celebratory anthems to soulful elegies to riotous party numbers, to sparse electronic production, to haunting polyphonic songs that have grown out of field recordings of birds, whales, fish, frogs, and fungi, and more. Running through all his work is a belief that the living world is a noisy and musical place with the power to change how we think, feel, and imagine. Together with his human and non-human collaborators, Cosmo creates music that speaks to the urgency and possibility of our times.
