Allen Valleys Landscape Partnership

Welcome to the North Pennines

This is one of England's most special places - a stunning landscape of open heather moors and peatlands, attractive dales and hay meadows, tumbling upland rivers, wonderful woods, welcoming communities, intriguing imprints of a mining and industrial past, distinctive birds, animals and plants and much, much more. In recognition of its special qualities the area has been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The North Pennines is also a European and Global Geopark - highlighting its globally important Earth heritage.

Find out more about the North Pennines and the work of the North Pennines AONB Partnership here, and visit the Explore North Pennines portal to discover the amazing range of activities available across the AONB. At the heart of this site is an interactive map which will allow you to search by activity, interest and location.

Allen Valleys Landscape Partnership

The North Pennines AONB Partnership has secured £1.7 million of funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the Allen Valleys Landscape Partnership Scheme, a four year programme of activities starting in the spring of 2014.

We aim to conserve and restore heritage features from haymeadows to smelt mills and to make the most of our heritage assets to give a boost to the visitor economy. Our projects will include:

  • Tackling river erosion problems
  • Restoring woodland and hedgerows
  • Planting new field trees
  • Conserving iconic species such as lapwings and red squirrels
  • Consolidating heritage structures including Allen Smelt Mill, Allenheads Bouse Teams and Ninebanks Hearse House
  • Establishing a new community observatory in Allenheads
  • Starting an electric bike hire network
  • Researching and collecting local histories and using our stories to bring the Allen Valleys alive to our visitors and ourselves
  • Supporting the Allen Valleys Folk Festival and an annual celebration of our heritage
