FOLK FESTIVAL PROGRAMME LAUNCH
This year’s programme launch takes place on Saturday April 29th featuring acoustic sets from Horovod and Birlinn Jiarg at St Cuthberts Church, Allendale. It’s a good opportunity to hear some great music and find about our plans for the main festival.
Horovod is an ensemble which performs arrangements of traditional music from the Balkans, Turkey and Greece. With clarinet, accordion and fiddle, they create a rich blend of melody and harmony which is complemented by the driving percussive sounds of tapan, darbuka and bouzouki. Expect to hear frantic Bulgarian dance rhythms, meditative melodic improvisations, stomping klezmer freilachs and everything in between.
Birlinn Jiarg was brought together by multi-instrumentalist Beccy Hurst. Originally from the Isle of Man, Beccy moved to England to study on the Folk Degree course at Newcastle University. The distinctive Manx sound of Birlinn Jiarg’s is the combination of Beccy’s whistle and concertina playing and the clarinet and flute of Freya Rae. The unusual combination of low whistle and clarinet was what originally inspired the band’s formation and sets their sound apart from more traditional line-ups.
